The Trap of the Forgetful Hearer

It is possible to hear God’s Word, agree with it, and even feel convicted by it, and still walk away completely unchanged. James 1 calls this the trap of the forgetful hearer, and it is more common than most of us would like to admit. The opposite of the forgetful hearer is not someone who can recall every point from last week’s message. It is the doer of the Word. Functional forgetting does not require amnesia. It simply requires inaction. If God said forgive, but bitterness remains, the Word has been functionally forgotten. True faithfulness to God’s Word means continuing under it, letting it shape us, and taking concrete steps of obedience when it speaks.
