If We Neglect This, We Undo All

This is a book worth getting friends.

With all the chaos in America and in the world, there is something comforting and reassuring about returning to Scripture and attempting to build, by God's grace, something simple and wholesome.

Yeah, it sounds a bit naive to some.  But I'm encouraged by the truth that God's Word is always right, and the patterns He's given us for family and church reflect His holy heart.

In the midst all the drama, I long for this in my family.  Something peaceful and pure.  Something holy and tender.  Something quiet and patient.  Something orderly and loving.  How about you?

Be encouraged!

"Suffer for the Gospel" by Voddie Baucham

The sermon below is from a mentor of mine (whether he wants to be or not! LOL), Dr. Voddie Baucham.  His text:

2 Timothy 1:8 ESV  Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God,

Dr. Baucham is currently on his way to Africa to serve as a seminary dean.  I'd urge you to consider supporting this good work!

This sermon was his last as an elder in his current church.  It is a poignant and powerful word, where the believer is exhorted to give his or her life for the sake of the Gospel, in love and joy.

Some of the things he said in this message were revelatory to me: "If you are in this for the people, you are done."  It must be for the Gospel...

Please listen HERE.  Listen to the WHOLE thing!  I NEEDED THIS.

Now, this post isn't meant to in any way exalt Voddie.  He'd absolutely hate that.  All honor is to Christ.  All glory belongs to Jesus.  All credit is to the Son of God alone.

I'm just saying the brother has truly, truly, truly blessed me and our Church, and I praise God for that.  By Christ's merciful grace, and for Christ's glory alone, from Voddie I learned so much more...

  • About the Gospel...about the sacrifice of Christ...as our only hope
  • About biblical manhood, and frankly in a way I'd never seen before
  • About the biblical pattern of age-integrated worship
  • About preaching with a higher degree of fidelity to Scripture
  • About parenting and being a good husband
  • About discipling children and using good  tools like catechism
  • About what it means to be lovingly BOLD in the pulpit
  • About the blessings of adopting children
  • About the biblical education of children
  • About biblical womanhood
  • About loving and serving all races in doctrinal soundness and love
  • About the need to study and being a continual learner

Again, praises and honor to Jesus alone!!

During this sermon, he also quotes one of my life passages:

2 Timothy 4:1-5 ESV  I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:  (2)  preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.  (3)  For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,  (4)  and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.  (5)  As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Amen.

Hey VB...thanks man.  Thanks for suffering for Christ's Gospel.  Thanks for continuing to serve our LORD.  Thanks for the perspective on pain and disappointment for the sake of the Gospel in this sermon...by the power of God.  Water for my soul sir.

Love you man and praying for you in Africa.

In Christ Jesus,

The Power of the Pattern

There is much to say in future months about “the pattern” and the call of our church to be a “pattern house.”  First, what is the Pattern?  Paul spoke about it:

2 Timothy 1:13 ESV  Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. (emphasis mine)

In the same Epistle, Paul mentions it again, but in different way:

·         2 Timothy 3:12-17 ESV  Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,  (13)  while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.  (14)  But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it  (15)  and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.  (16)  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,  (17)  that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (Emphasis mine)

The Pattern can be described as:

The fundamental doctrines, expressions, and traditions given to the Church by Christ through the New Testament writers.

The Pattern is simply:

Who Christ intended His church to be, what He intended it to teach, and the way He designed it to operate.  All of this is clearly illustrated in the New Testament.

The Apostle often encouraged the church build according to the Scriptures, which is another way of saying “follow the pattern.”  He also called it “holding to the traditions” they were taught. (1 Cor 11:2; 2 Thes 2:15)  This is no small matter.  He wrote to the church at Thessalonica:

·         2 Th 3:6 ESV  (6)  Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.

·         2 Th 3:14 ESV  (14)  If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed.

Another way he preached this pattern principle was his call to imitate him.  He said to the church at Corinth:

·         1 Cor 4:16-17 ESV  (16)  I urge you, then, be imitators of me.  (17)  That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church.

Obviously, there is a lot about following the biblical church pattern that challenges us.  However, our church preaches through large portions of Scripture, not to try to impress the "expository" lovers :), but rather to position ourselves to align with the Lord of Church’s desires that He spoke through the New Testament writers, not our own.

And make no mistake: the Lord of the Church is in charge!  Don’t think so?  Remember, in Revelation when Jesus spoke authoritatively to His Church?

1.       Rev 2:1 ESV  "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: 'The words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

2.       Rev 2:8 ESV  "And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: 'The words of the first and the last, who died and came to life.

3.       Rev 2:12 ESV  "And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: 'The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.

4.       Rev 2:18 ESV  "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: 'The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.

5.       Rev 3:1 ESV  "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: 'The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. "'I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead.

6.       Rev 3:7 ESV  "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: 'The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

7.       Rev 3:14 ESV  "And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: 'The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

Jesus is LORD!  And He is Lord over all, including His Church.  He still leads it, loves and nurtures it, and commands it.

The above means an awful lot to me.  Be King of us Lord Christ.  Rule over us and teach us.

Amen.

Ten Immediate Things YOU could do to Fight for LIFE!

It’s 3:53pm on July 28, 2015 as I write.  Shortly before lunch, I viewed the third video released to show Planned Parenthood’s overwhelming, demonic evil.  I won’t link to that video here, but you can find it if you desire.  But not on the mainstream media websites.  They won’t cover it.

Planned Parenthood and their “partners” harvest and sell baby parts.  They celebrate the killing of babies (abortion) and we now clearly see they also profit greatly from dissecting and distributing the dead baby’s organs.  They are federally funded (our tax dollars) to the tune of over $500 million dollars yearly.  The President supports them.  So does most of the Congress, including many so-called conservatives.  My “blackness” is sometimes criticized because I don’t support this.  I cannot support anyone who cannot figure out marriage (one man and one woman) and the evil of murder.  Sorry.

I cannot eat.  I am physically nauseous.  I wanted to tweet much and rail against this darkness, but I’m sure I’d be misunderstood.  Besides, the Twitter rule for pastors is “always be nice.”  So there’s that.

Prayerfully and hopefully constructively, I’m trying to pour my sadness and anger into something positive.  Maybe then I’ll be able to eat dinner.  Or maybe not.

Anyway…just off the cuff, here are Ten Immediate Things YOU could do to Fight for Life:

1.       Pray.  Begin (if you aren’t already) praying FOR mothers-to-be in tough situations and AGAINST abortion providers.  The industry is pure evil.

2.       Preach the Gospel!  Yes…tell people about the Author of LIFE, how He gave His LIFE because of our sins, and also to give LIFE eternally!  Not sure how ANYONE who embraces His message can approve organizations like Planned Parenthood.

3.       Teach your children a biblical worldview as it relates to LIFE.  It’s all in there…in His inerrant and sufficient Book…the Bible.

4.       Encourage your pastor in this area.  In love, email him today!  Depending on your context, he might be afraid to broach the subject for fear of loss or conflict within his congregation or going against the common Government-Baal worship (idolatry) so ingrained in Western culture.

5.       Encourage all in your sphere of influence to fight for and uphold LIFE.

6.       Support LIFE ministries with your time.  I volunteer my time on the Board of our local Crisis Pregnancy Center as one example.  Some minister in front of abortion clinics.  Others counsel young girls in crisis.  Whatever…do something!

7.       Support the same with your money.  We give to what means something to us.  So give to churches and ministries that fight for LIFE.

8.       Consider Adopting.  All cannot.  Many can.  SO many children need godly families…RIGHT NOW.

9.       Be a foster parent, or at least consider it.

10.   Contact your state and federal legislator and tell them to defund Planned Parenthood and support LIFE or respectfully, you’ll work to get them out of office.
