Five Encouragements for Young Men

Recently, at his request, I sent this to a son of a friend. This young man had just turned 21. I wish I had this sort of teaching when I was that age! I hope it blesses you or someone you know!

——————

Read!

  • This may sound obvious, but it’s not.  I don’t just mean read for your college classes or for enjoyment.  I mean read to learn the rich truths of our faith in our LORD.  Read church history.  Read the church fathers.  Read the reformers and the puritans.  And of course, read and re-read the Scriptures.

  • Here at age 50, I’ve spent many years trying to go back and learn/re-learn things our spiritual forefathers already understood and practiced.  What a waste of time!!!!!

  • At 21, such reading would have greatly matured me and given me a historical perspective with which to deal with modern craziness.

  • Read son.

Dream!

  • 21 is a glorious age; you are an adult!

  • As the careful student of history understands, men of old time accomplished much at early ages; wrote books, fought wars, held high offices, etc.

  • What is it that God is asking you to do?  YOU ARE NOT TOO YOUNG to dream about these things, and then begin building.

  • Start a business?  Be a missionary?  Write a book?  Lead teams?

Learn!

  • Who do you need to know to accomplish your dreams?  Who do you need to meet and be mentored by?

  • In what spheres of life?  Business?  Church?  Sports?  Arts?

  • Go meet them!  Be bold!  Lean in!  Attack each day!

  • Now is the time to set a impactful life trajectory; don’t sit back.  Prayerfully go forward!

  • Keep a journal; it will pay off long term.  (I wish I did!)

Marry!

  • Ok, your mother may not like this one. :)

  • This is not said enough in our culture, but IT IS ok to marry young if God sends you the right woman.  Scripture talks about the blessings of the wife of your YOUTH. (Prov 5:18)

  • Too many delay too long and it gets them into no end of trouble.  If you can provide simple, safe living for her and your parents bless the union, marry young and be happy.  I did!

  • Have babies.  Be fruitful.  There is no magic age in your 30’s!

Save!

  • NOW.  Right NOW.  Save son!

  • This of course means you must work hard and earn.  But…SAVE.

  • Save a few thousand in cash, and then invest at least $100/mo.  Don’t let anything stop you.  Each and every month without fail.  Start.  START.  STAAAARRRRTTTT! :)

  • When you are my age, you will be happy that you did!

Be strong young men; be brave!  We need you!

Offense!

Offense!

Ephesians 6:13-20 (KJV)  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  14  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;  15  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  16  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.  17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:  18  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;  19  And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,  20  For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

To be on offense is to attack.  It is to be aggressive.  It is to draw the sword and swing it.

It is opposite of “defense” in that one isn’t trying to PREVENT an enemy from advancing; one is trying to ADVANCE ON the enemy!

Church, we’ve been on defense too long.  It’s time to get back on offense for awhile.

Over the last few years, we have gone through a lot.  Why?  Was there a scandal?  Did somebody do something inappropriate with money?  Was there carnal “sin in the camp?”  By God’s grace, no!  What happened was, we preached the Word.  Perfectly?  Nope.  Lovingly?  I hope so.  Boldly?  Most certainly.  We stood on Scripture in areas where the Satan’s attacks are greatest: Gospel, marriage, children, manhood, womanhood, and order in the church—as these things are defined by Scripture alone; Sola Scriptura indeed!

I’m not complaining, just explaining. 😀

Now, in crisis-laden 2020, it’s time to go back to business…Kingdom business…Christ’s business.  Back on offense!  What might an “offensive” mindset look like?

Here are a few thoughts, followed by a few areas in which those thoughts will hopefully apply:

  1. Humility plus boldness!

  2. Taking the intuitive!

  3. Not being ashamed of the Gospel!

  4. Prioritizing Christ and His Church!

  5. Generosity!

  6. Believing again!

  7. Bold, powerful forgiveness!

  8. Accountability!

  9. Intentionality!

  10. Passion, Joy, Gladness!

Areas:

  1. Preaching the Gospel; helping our Community!

  2. Handing out tracts (people have recently visited because we did this!)

  3. Intentional Hospitality with unchurched friends and unbelievers!

  4. Serving our church with joy!

  5. Increasing our weekly giving!

  6. Inviting people to church AND following up with them!***

  7. Being on time; being prepared for worship!

  8. Becoming more passionate about Prayer!

  9. Reverence and godly fear!

  10. Getting excited what God might do at CRCC!

A Caveat:

1 Corinthians 3:7 (KJV)  So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

I am, frankly, praying that God will cause our church to reach more people.  However, God is sovereign over His church.  Only He can cause growth.  But we must plant and water.  We must sow!

Getting back on offense is about sowing.

It’s about offering the LORD our fews fishes and loaves and seeing what He might do with them.  It’s about being extremely intentional, setting our hearts to these things and acting upon them.

Let us do just that, in Jesus’ Name.

Amen!

*** In our current day, CRCC is a church that requires a bit more follow up with visiting friends.  Our worship style, adherence to New Testament order, and lack of a children’s church mean a bit more explanation will be needed for most people to get comfortable.

Embrace this.  It is our call as a Pattern House.  Share the applicable Scriptures with visitors so they see what we are attempting to do is what the Church as always done!

The Discouragement Gap

The Discouragement Gap

Recently on a sermon on what God’s Word says about Men, Women, and Marriage, I mentioned this verse:

"Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."  Isaiah 55:7-9 (KJV)

I was making a point about God’s perfect standards for gender and marriage (and indeed, all of life) and how if we aren’t careful, we as sinful, fallible humans, could become discouraged when reading them.  I called the distance between those wonderful precepts and our typical living, “The Discouragement Gap.”

Real talk: sometimes, reading Scripture can be painful.  Reading how marriage “ought to be” or how women “should be” or reading about the “biblical vision for parenting” can be disheartening!   Our lives often seem so far away from what God has commanded and our daily decisions/routines so distant from the statues of the King.

But beloved, here is the point.  God’s ways ARE higher than ours!  Amen?  In fact, according to the above passage of Scripture, His ways are as far from ours as the heavens are from the earth!  This is His way of telling us that His holiness and perfection are unattainable for us!

Indeed, His ways being higher than ours is a “gospel statement.”  The reason Christ came was because we, as sinners, are incapable of attaining unto holiness on our own.  We were born in sin.  We sin all our lives.  God’s Laws are perfect we are most certainly not.  We violate His commands constantly and are constantly in need of grace.

Jesus came to put our souls right before the Father.  He was born in purity, kept the Law perfectly, and went to the cross to pay our penalty.  Praise Him!

So do not be discouraged!  Our King commands us, in the power of His Spirit, to live unto Him…to do everything as if we are doing them for Him:

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons."  Colossians 3:23-25 (KJV)

His promise is that He would honor our efforts to please Him by empowering us by His Spirit. (Acts 2:4; Rom 15:13; Eph 5:18)  We are to strive to live in a manner pleasing to the God who saved us!

"For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:"  Colossians 1:9-14 (KJV)

So beloved, embrace the truth that God’s standards ARE high.  Know that on your behalf, Christ met those standards.  Then, in His power, humbly receive the ingrafted Word instead of resenting it!  Be a doer not just a hearer deceiving yourself! (Jam 1:22)

Love the Word!  Be grateful for “the gap!”  The “highness” of God’s standards demonstrates His infinite wisdom and knowledge and His total and absolute power, authority, and holiness!  Know that although your works do not save you, the saved count it an honor to work! Yes, God’s expectations for men are high and His standards for women are gloriously counter-cultural!  Yes, His commands to His “called out ones” (The Church) are not easy; nevertheless they are designed to ensure that we are “a city set upon a hill,” and “the pillar and ground of truth.” (Matt 5:14; 1 Tim 3:15)

So say “Amen!” to what the sufficient Word of Christ says and then pursue obedience with your whole heart!  What other way is there for a Christian to live?

"But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness."  2 Peter 3:10-13 (KJV)

Amen!  Solus Christus!  Soli Deo Gloria!

Doctrine vs. Commands

Friends,

I think sometimes, confusion regarding the differences between doctrines and commands keeps us from fully obeying our LORD in love and faithfulness.  I’ve come to call this confusion “category error.”

A category is a “division or class” of a thing.  Inadvertently, we sometimes mix up these categories and hurt ourselves and our churches.

For example, a doctrine is a teaching.  To some extent, both theological doctrines and biblical commands can be called “doctrines.”  But there is a finer point to consider.  When we consider the “most important” doctrines found in the Bible, certain ones come to mind:

  • The Sovereignty and Power of our Eternal God

  • The Triune Godhead

  • The Deity and Humanity of Christ

  • The Sufficiency of Scripture

  • The Doctrine of the Church

  • Salvation by Grace through Faith Alone

  • The Return of Christ

Most believers would consider these doctrines “primary” or “first tier.”  Then there are doctrines like:

  • Modes and kinds of Baptism (immersion or sprinkling, babies or just confessing adults)

  • End Times views (Eschatology)

For most, these would be considered “secondary” or “second tier” teachings.  Then there are a few important moral/liberty issues that aren’t as well defined and about which Christians might use certain biblical principles to stake out a position (also called “tertiary” issues):

  • Acceptable foods

  • Which Day to worship

  • Which holidays to celebrate

  • Which kinds of music to use in LORD’s Day worship

  • Order of Service

  • How often to serve the LORD’s Table

  • How to educate our children

Concerning these things there are wide-ranging views among sincere believers.  But here are a few teachings (for our purposes, I’m calling them “Commands”) we MUST NOT place onto the sliding scale of doctrinal importance:

  • Idolatry

  • Murder

  • Adultery and fornication

  • Lying

  • Stealing

…and other “sins.”  God has “commanded” that these things not be done.  They are not up for debate; they are not “non-essential” doctrines.  They are in a different category altogether.  They are sins.

Do you see the difference?  Whereas we might have a vigorous but loving debate over amillennialism vs postmillennialism or casual church vs. formal church, we should never debate whether committing adultery is right or wrong.  That issue has been settled by God.  It is in the “Command Category.”  A church might debate modes of baptism, but it must never debate whether baptism is required.  Lying isn’t “no big deal” or a “secondary issue.”  It is sin.

Again, theological doctrines tend to be assembled using the whole counsel of God in an attempt to understand God better.  Moral commands are given to us by God to execute without delay.

Beloved, I submit that sometimes we slide our sins into the systematic theology category and act as if disobedience is up for debate.  If God says "do not do" and we do…that is sin.  If God says “do these things” and we refuse to, that is sin.  Sin is always a big deal.  The remedy isn’t a committee; it’s repentance!

There are several issues in our current day that believers are calling “second tier” and “small issues” that are actually against the commands of God; they are transgressions.  We're making little progress with them because we have them in the wrong category and are treating them as mere doctrinal differences or personal preferences.  As a result we are attempting to implement wrong solutions.

May we learn the difference between theological understanding and rebellion. Much is at stake.
