We Need Thee

Eternal God our Father,

We need Thee.

There is so much happening around us. So much sin. So much pain. So much disappointment. So much falsehood and deception. We confess our confusion, frustration, and wickedness and beg for Thy forgiveness.

We need Thee.

You are God alone. You sent Jesus Christ Thy Son to reveal Thy Truth, bind up our wounds, heal our infirmities, and set us free from our sins. LORD Jesus, You alone are our Savior, the only one upon whom we can depend. You are our King, LORD, Master, Deliverer and Friend.

We need Thee.

Holy Spirit, Thou art God. We need Thy unction and conviction; Thy reproof and correction; Thy enablement and step-by-step guidance in every way and every day.

We need Thee.

Oh Great God, You have taught us so much. Now break our hearts for Thee. Humble us and help us be contrite before Thee. We are nothing without Thee. You deserve our worship and praise, our heart's loyalty and our service. Help us keep our minds stayed upon Thee. Help our lips drip the knowledge that comes from Thy Word and our hearts to be open to hear.

We need Thee.

Oh LORD, bless our gathering on Thy Day. Let us come before Thy Presence with singing, our hearts filled with adoration. Let us worship and bow down, kneeling before Thee, our Maker.

We need Thee.

Master, bless and strengthen our households. May they reflect Thy worship and honor, Thy peace and joy, Thy wisdom and knowledge. Save our parents. Save our children. Save our marriages. Save us unto purity.

We need Thee.

Help us to truly love, truly forgive, truly give, truly serve, truly discern, and truly obey. Send revelation! Teach us. Admonish us. Restore unto us Thy joy! Fill us again with Thy good Spirit. Pour out upon us again Thy tender mercies.

We need Thee. Every hour. We need Thee!

Amen.

30 Blessings from Fearing the LORD!

The Blessings of Fearing the LORD

In the King James Bible, the phrase “Fear of the LORD” is given 30 times. In each, some kind of blessing is implied or described! Let us be encouraged in them!

  1. 1Sa 11:7 Courage! Saul asserted himself as king and the people rallied to defeat the Ammonites!

  2. 2Ch 14:14 Victory! When Asa reigned in Judah, he humbly sought the LORD for help against his enemies. (2 Chr 14:11). He defeated his enemies and the people nearby were afraid!

  3. 2Ch 17:10 Peace! Jehoshaphat feared God and cleansed Judah of Asherah worship and sent leaders throughout his cities to teach God’s Word. God blessed such obedience with peace!

  4. 2Ch 19:7 Integrity! Jehoshaphat installed judges throughout the land. Godly fear would make them righteous, incorruptible judges!

  5. 2Ch 19:9 Faithfulness! Reverence and awe of God aligns with and produces fidelity!

  6. Job 28:28 Perspective! Remember what Job went through: the loss of his 10 children, servants, property, and health! Nevertheless, He Feared God and did not charge Him with wrong. (Job 1:22, ESV)

  7. Psa 19:9 Purity! Fearing God according to His Word brings cleanness and practical holiness.

  8. Psa 34:11 Discipleship! The next verses promise long, good life filled with blessed speech and the pursuit of peace. God’s eyes are upon such and He hears their cries! (Ps 34:12-15)

  9. Psa 111:10 Obedience! The Fear of the LORD encourages “doing” His Commandments!

  10. Pro 1:7 Knowledge! The Fear of the LORD enables us to perceive and understand that which is true!

  11. Pro 1:29 Humility! To choose to Fear God is the opposite of the prideful, stiff-necked scorner!

  12. Pro 2:5 Maturity! In context, if one seeks wisdom whole-heartedly, one will find it, and thus, increase his/her knowledge of God.

  13. Pro 8:13 Passion! The Fear of the LORD brings about a holy (not prideful) zeal!

  14. Pro 9:10 Wisdom! The Fear of the LORD is the starting point for Godly wisdom…the application of Godly knowledge!

  15. Pro 10:27 Longevity! Less mistakes and self-inflicted drama often translates to more years!

  16. Pro 14:26 Safety! A person who Fears God brings builds a secure household.

  17. Pro 14:27 Vitality! The word “fountain” means “wellspring.” The Fear of the LORD creates a reserve of strength, enabling better decisions!

  18. Pro 15:16 Contentment! Better to obey God than have worldly treasures!

  19. Pro 15:33 Posture! The Fear of the LORD is “how” one obeys, or applies knowledge. Humbly!

  20. Pro 16:6 Escape! Sometimes, the way of escape is reverent fear! (1 Cor 10:13)

  21. Pro 19:23 Rest! “The fear of the LORD leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.” (ESV)

  22. Pro 22:4 Riches! Although relative, humble obedience tends to produce material blessings!

  23. Pro 23:17 Happiness! Joy instead of jealousy; delight instead of discouragement!

  24. Isa 2:10 Reverence! “Fear” in this verse, as well as Isaiah 2:19 and 2:21 below, may be better translated terror. They describe God’s judgment on a rebellious people. Although in Christ, we don’t have to fear such judgment, let us consider a few attitudes that respect the judgment and wrath of Almighty God and view those as blessings!

  25. Isa 2:19 Mercy! Judgment should have fallen upon us! Let us fear the God who spared us!

  26. Isa 2:21 Grace! Although we should be cowering in fear because of the coming Judgment, we have been graced eternal life in Jesus our LORD!

  27. Isa 11:2 Jesus! This verse refers to the Stem and Branch of Jesse…the Messiah…Jesus Christ. Among His holy attributes will be the fear of the LORD! When we Fear God, we follow Christ’s example!

  28. Isa 11:3 Discernment! This verse literally means the Messiah will “smell” or “sense” that which is right. When we follow Christ in awe and reverence, He helps us discern and judge rightly!

  29. Isa 33:6 Treasure! God grants righteousness, wisdom, and knowledge to His people through Jesus Christ. Our rightful response of reverence and awe is precious and brings stability!

  30. Act 9:31 Growth! God honored their deep love and respect for Him! I believe He still does! “The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.” (NLT)

CRC, let us Fear the LORD and be blessed!

Humility?

Why is there so much confusion and rebellion? We reject God’s very words. The very Words of the LORD of Hosts. How can there not be?

Eschewing the simplest of holy Commands, we have built lives with contrary, man-centered doctrines.

Because we have built so, tearing down what we have sinfully built would mean change on a massively large scale…life disruption and overwhelming faith unheard of in most of our lives. But that is precisely what we need to do.

Instead of fearfully and with heartfelt repentance acknowledging our wrong, we obfuscate and misdirect. We blame “interpretations" and suggest “God could not have possible meant that.”

Hath God said? He has. Most of what He has spoken is very clear.

We have rejected God’s very Words for men, women, home life, church life, marriage, parenting, money, holiness, discipline, idolatry, and on and on.

2020 should have taught us humility. We should be running (not walking!) back to Scripture!

We aren’t.

Honor begins at Home

Ephesians 6:1-3 (KJV)  Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.  2  Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)  3  That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Most Christians have read these verses.  Many have them memorized.  Because of Christian influence over the centuries, society at large is even familiar with them.  Very few however, understand what it means to honor another person.  Sure, followers of Christ mostly understand that God deserves to be honored.  We know from the Bible that our LORD and His Word are to be treated reverently and with respect.  Humorously to culture, some of us old people still use antiquated words and phrases like “circumspectly,” “propriety” and “fear and trembling” when we consider the greatness of our God!

However, for some reason, the idea of honoring another person inflames our cultural sensibilities.  The thought of lowering ourselves, showing deference, and dare I say “submitting ourselves” to others, particularly those in authority (another word we don’t like) over us, annoys to no end.

It just so happens that honor is a godly thing, and having biblical honor as a part of one’s character is crucial to the proper functioning of the major jurisdictions (or realms of authority) created by God: home, church, and state.

Sadly, the lack of honorable behavior is on full display in the homes, streets, and churches of America as we speak, resulting in the profane vitriol and pervasive violence we see and read about day after day.

The Text above was written by the Apostle Paul.  His Epistle to the Ephesians is one of the most beautiful and theologically complete letters written.  The first three chapters are mostly indicatives. Paul made sure the Ephesian church understood their relationship to Christ: who He is, what He did, and what His work meant for them, particularly as it relates to the magnificent grace they received.

The last three chapters are almost all imperatives: practical commands and instructions for the Christian home and church, based firmly but lovingly on the Gospel.  In this context, we find these beautiful instructions concerning honor at home.  Beginning in chapter 4, Paul issues much needed directives concerning how the church might be more unified in Christ, how to fight against sin and be holy, what being filled with the Spirit looks like in practice, and how families should conduct themselves.  After carefully teaching about marriage in chapter five, Paul also reminds the church that God’s Commandment for children to honor parents is still in effect.

The word “obey” in  Ephesians 6:1 means to heed or conform to a command or authority. (Strong’s)  The word “right” can also translated “righteous or just.”  In other words, the obedience called for is not just culturally “right” or “conveniently” right but is also “creationally" right and points to God’s beautiful design!  This sort of obedience and honor promotes blessing! Why?

  • Because our parents typically know more than we do and their wisdom would help us.

  • Because such honor would lessen transgression, and consequently, the debilitating affects of sin in our lives, which would increase live and prosperity.

  • Because to honor parents is to honor the God who gave the command!

Honoring parents being “the first commandment with a promise” suggests how important this command is to home, church, and even society at large.  Since honor greatly clashes with our sin nature, it must be taught and cultivated at a young age.  Honor begins at home!

The Principle of Honor

In Ephesians 6:2, the word for honor in Greek is timaō.  It means to prize, that is, fix a valuation upon; by implication to revere. (Strong’s) Another definition is “to revere; to respect; to treat with deference and submission, and perform relative duties to.” (Webster 1828 Dictionary)  Our LORD commands children to highly regard their parents and to lovingly yield to their authority.  Again the promises of honor are prolonged days and a more blessed life!  God values and blesses our desire to esteem our parents!

Consider the wide-ranging implications of a lack of honor:

  • Disrespected husbands and fathers

  • Unloved wives and mothers

  • Unkind and profane words

  • Dishonesty and loss of trust

  • Immodesty and a lack of propriety

  • Loss of shamefacedness

  • Lack of swift repentance and forgiveness

  • Generational discord

  • Sibling rivalry

  • Unrest and violence

  • Loss of unity and joy!

In a recent sermon series on the Biblically-Healthy Household, I told our church:

So then a biblically-healthy family is lovingly-ordered.  God Himself is a God of order (1 Cor 14:33, 40).  Therefore, this household strives to be governed according to God’s design.  Here is another way to say this: I submit the chief trait present in biblically-healthy families is honor.”

Honor is the glue that holds everything together; it is the grease that causes things to run smoothly and the guardrails for when things get testy.  With it, the household is a WONDERFUL place to be.  WITHOUT it, there is disrespect, distrust, and disorder.  Chaos!  May we remember that biblical honor is not based on performance; biblical honor is based in intrinsic value…in the office one holds and the God who ordained such.

May your household be characterized by the love of God in Christ and careful, passionate, and sweet honor towards God, parents, and one another!

Solus Christus!
